Such a Long Journey Ahead for You and Me (2004)

Maria Vagle (1961) is educated as an architect. She has for a number of years worked as a sceneographer and is currently working as a visual artist. The last few years she has been travelling between Oslo and Havanna, where she is been working with afrocuban rumba, with performance, dance and video together with the music group Iroso Obbá.

Artists' own statement:

Being on a journey means being in several places simultaneously or not being anywhere at all, but rather finding oneself in a condition. This is an uncertain state in which familiar routines cease, but we have not yet found anything new. Being outside the language means that we lose frames of reference and our ability to orientate ourselves. It becomes difficult to describe new experiences. The sound on the video has been recorded on various journeys. From New York, a conversation with a taxi-driver about illegal immigration; from Iceland, the sound of various natural phenomena and geyser eruptions; and from Cuba, a boxing match, a train ride, a religious festival and other sounds.

------------------------------
