Still from Migrations - Farhad Kalantary 2005-08

Farhad Kalantary is a visual artist working with film, video and installations, in Oslo, Norway. He studied film and video art in San Francisco State University (BA, 1992) and San Francisco Art Institute (MFA, 1996).

As well as international film festivals his works have been shown in various in galleries and museums in the US and Europe, and they are part of the collections of Moderna Museum, Stockholm, and Arts Council Norway.

Kalantary primarily works with the non-narrative. His works are the converging point of the formal with the poetic. Within a frame of perpetual movement he explores issues pertaining to our sense of time and space, the relationship of sound and image and the poetics of speed.

Kalantary is the co-founder and leader of the project room Atopia (2003-) in Oslo.

Migrations” is a four-screen, synchronized video installation. It explores the ways in which screens interact and rhyme with each other.

“Migrations” is a tribute to all nomadic bodies who challenge territorial boarders and claim their own rights of passage. Intensity of their movement infiltrates all territorial frames, be it a screen or a region they make their way in, stay for as long as their momentum allows, and break away as they wish.
In every crossing they take a fatal risk, they loose pieces and leave traces behind. They accept new memories and identities, and they create another pattern of speed.

“Migrations” was produced during an artist residency at “Platform Garanti Contemporary Art Center – Istanbul” in the spring of 2005. The residency was granted through the Office for Contemporary Art Norway (OCA).
