Célio de Carvalho was born in Rio de Janeiro in a family of clasical musicians. As he says he doesn't remember when he started to play drums; – Ever since I remember it has always being a drum around me. At the age of ten Célio de Carvalho studed clarinet in the marching band of the Colegio Salesianos Santa Rosa under the direction of Mestre Afonso dos Reis. Playing Capoeira and Samba on the streets he got the contact with some of the brazilian rythms. At the age of 16 he started to join local groups at the trap drums. He played with inumerous local groups in an intense activity carying his drums in the busses around Rio going from reharsal to reharsal, from gig to gig in an exhausting marathon. Three years later started a clasical percussion studie at Instituto Villa Lobos under leading of Edgar Nunes Roca and Hugo Tagning, five years in the conservatorium ended up in a meeting with Hermeto Pascoal. He abandoned school five months before getting his diplom; – Hermeto gave me, in a couple of months, much more then what I got in five years in the school. In 1983 he was invited to teach samba in Oslo for the norwegian carneval. He was planing to stay one year in Norway but he has now stayed twenty three. | |
Curriculum VitaeCélio de Carvalho have produced more than seventy records recorded in Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, USA, Germany, Brazil, Danmark and Russia. Seven of his records have got Spelemannsprisen, the Norwegian Grammy. In 1996 he released his solo album Avenida Brasil.Célio de Carvalho has a duo with the most celebrated drummer of Brazil, Robertinho Silva, and he has recently founded the jazzrock group A Primal Spirit. Further he takes part in this groups: Combonations, Zanza, Philip Hamilton Band (USA), Oleg Kirev Band (Russia), Claudio Dauelsberg Quartet. Adding to this, Célio de Carvalho has performed and recorded with inumerous groups and artists, to name some: The Talisman Group, Trio De Janeiro, Jørn Hoel, Jan Eggum, Øystein Sunde, Nuku, Jon Christensens Bestilingsverk, Tone Holbækmo and Hans Frederik Jakobsen, Kalenda Maya, Håkon Grafs Grafitti, Geir Lystrup, David Chocron, Kringkastingsorkesteret, Sissel Kirkjebø, Oslo Gospel Choir, Mezzoforte (Iceland), Gaia (Iceland), Full Circle (USA), Artur Maia (Brazil), Ju Cassou (Brazil), Catia de Franca (Brazil), SESC (Brazil), Bye Bye Brazil (Netherlands), Arkady Shilkloper (Russia) and many more. Célio de Carvalho is touring the world in a constant exhausting activity. Over the last 8 years Célio de Carvalho has started a cultural project involving Brazil and Norway. By now he has taken Norwegian musicians for tours in Brazil 7 times with great sucsess. Célio de Carvalho's project has toured around Brazil for the organization SESC. It is the first time in SESC's historiy that an artist do more than one «whole country» tour, and more tours are to come. Célio de Carvalho has been working for the Norwegian state organization Rikskonsertene for twenty one years traveling the whole country playing for childrem and adults. He has held workshops at Norges Musikkhøyskole (Oslo); Summer Jazz (Finland); Slagverksfestivalen (Stockholm); Bergen Filharmonien (Philarmonic Orchestra Bergen); Førde International Folk Music Festival; Lørenskog Musikkskole and much more. He has received support from Norsk Kassetavgiftsfond and Fond For Utøvende Kunstnere. He is also doing a filantropic work with kids in two favelas i Rio de Janeiro. |
